AVR118 still a drug in search of a disease? On April 12, 2002, there was a press release from the company that Phase 2 topical studies in genital warts had begun. But late last year the company mentioned that Phase 2 studies were still being planned. So were we “misinformed” in April 2002 about the studies actually beginning or were they halted soon after they commenced for want of funds? Whatever the real story was, there does not seem to be a real interest in moving quickly with the HPV indication of the drug. In the treatment of AIDS proper, AVR118 seems to work marginally, as indicated by the so-so and modest results observed in the Barbados study which were eventually published in a journal. The fact that the drug has not been advanced by the company for AIDS treatment since the study was done in 1996 (eight years ago) indicates there is no real interest in pursuing this avenue either, since the drug does not seem to have a direct effect on HIV like other clinically used AIDS drugs. Patents have been filed or granted for uses of the drug as diverse as treating lymphomas, basal cell carcinoma, canine distemper or stimulating red blood cell production, all based on one or two anecdotal and unverified pieces of evidence presented as examples. Yet no clinical studies have been carried out or apparently are in the works for any of these uses since the patent applications were filed some years ago. If the drug were really effective and held good promise in major life-threatening diseases such as lymphomas or basal cell carcinomas or anemia, surely these would have been the indications the company would have been expected to pursue avidly and quickly to get fast-tracked through the FDA. There was also some hype on this board when the SARS epidemic and the smallpox scare came about that AVR118 might have use in these applications. Apparently, nothing came of these either. On April 23, 2002, a press release mentioned broad potential applications of the drug in leukemia, rheumatoid arthritis, autoimmune diseases and shingles. An article on the erstwhile “Dr. Hirschman’s Forum” on the corporate website mentioned the potential use of drugs like AVR118 in mitigating the toxicity of cancer chemotherapy drugs. This has not been followed up, either. The company (despite its name) appears to have moved away from any direct antiviral applications of the drug entirely- in AIDS, herpes, HPV, SARS or smallpox, among others. Despite the past hype, nothing has materialized. The company instead, decided to focus on one AIDS cachexia study and two cancer cachexia trials in Israel early last year. The two trials in the cancer patients were promptly and abruptly canceled and the one remaining Phase 1 trial in 30 patients has not as yet been completed due to patient recruitment problems in over a year since the study began. The results in the first 15 patients were reported as “preliminary results that are encouraging” in a November 2003 press release It remains to be seen if these preliminary results are borne out statistically if and when the 30 patient study is completed, and how good the results of the study are. It’s sad to say, but after all these years, and millions of dollars spent, AVR118 still seems to be very much a drug in search of a disease |

either way I don't really understand what's going on." Keith, thus we have a price of 12 cents, whereas it was trading at 58 cents before SZH gave us the formula, the IND, the Israeli testing. I think what this is about is decades of anecdotal reports, of which none has been able to be replicated in any bona-fide respected testing regime. The changing focus at every bend in the road doesn't help prospective investors want to risk any cash in a company that STILL doesn't have a grasp on its own soul. Add to that some pretty high grade scientific and financial mismanagement and now no one knows what is going on or what the future portends.
